The Black AIDS Institute's annual fundraiser will be held in conjunction with the 60th-birthday party of Phill Wilson, its president and CEO. The gathering will take place Saturday, April 23, 2016, in Los Angeles. In lieu of birthday gifts, Wilson asks that friends and supporters make charitable donations to the Institute. "There is nothing more important that I could ever ask for as a birthday gift than a donation to the Black AIDS Institute," he says.

White House Meeting on HIV Stigma Examines Interventions, Measures, Actions

Cornelius Baker, Greg Millett, Regan Hofmann and Douglas Brooks discuss HIV-related stigma at White House panel

As we approach the 35th anniversary of the first case reports of what would later come to be known as HIV/AIDS, we can rightfully celebrate that we now have an array of effective tools to prevent new infections, diagnose them, and care for people living with HIV. Yet the great effectiveness of these tools is too often blunted due to persistent HIV-related stigma and discrimination. We know from studies as well as countless personal stories that HIV-related stigma inhibits far too many people from accessing HIV prevention, testing, and care, even today. Clearly, in order to end the epidemic, we must combat stigma and discrimination. With that in mind, as part of ongoing work to advance the National HIV/AIDS Strategy, the White House and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) held a meeting specifically focused on what the research tells us about HIV-related stigma and what more we need to know about it.

Raffi Freedman-Gurspan, Outreach and Recruitment Director for Presidential Personnel and Associate Director for Public Engagement, The White House

Following the close of National LGBT Health Awareness Week, we wanted to recognize the ongoing work and challenges to improve the lives of transgender Americans. In February, we held the first-ever White House consultation on HIV among transgender people. The consultation brought community leaders, researchers, and advocates from across the country together with Federal agency partners to discuss issues transgender people face, and what the Federal government can do to reduce their risk of acquiring HIV, support them in accessing HIV care, and improve their lives.

For the past several weeks, we have been sharing a roundtable discussion that took place among members of the Black AIDS Institute's recent Cuban delegation. This week we bring that series to a close with a wide-ranging conversation about the trans movement, HIV/AIDS, sex tourism and the gay scene in that nation.
