Dr. Ron Valdessieri

Jim Sulton, educational correspondent for the Jackson Advocate, and Phill Wilson, President and CEO of The Black AIDS Institute, sat down with Ron Valdiserri, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health and Infectious Diseases at the Department of Health and Human Services, at the 20th Biennial International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2014).

I'm not exactly a Sesame Street baby, but I remember the learning exercise that teaches children how to distinguish objects from other objects. It asks: Which one of these things is not like the other? This simple exercise helped me as a child and it might help us all better understand ideas necessary to effectively fight HIV/AIDS.

A wonderful welcome it has been here in the land down under. And while it is officially winter, Melbourne has warmly greeted us—the global community of persons living with HIV, advocates and activists, researchers, clinicians, policymakers, practitioners, private industry representatives and government officials—to the 20th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2014). From plays, art exhibits, and special events to red firework displays, red-lighted buildings and red larger-than-life AIDS 2014 signage throughout the city, Melbourne has embraced both the conference and its participants.

Fighting TB and HIV together

According to the World Health Organization (WHO): "Since the beginning of the epidemic, almost 75 million people have been infected with the HIV virus and about 36 million people have died of HIV." Current estimates indicate that more than 36 million people are living with HIV.

AIDS 2014 Newsmaker: Ifeanyi Orazulike

Ifeanyi Orazulike

Earlier this year, Nigeria passed a law mandating a 14-year prison sentence for anyone entering a same-sex union and a 10-year term for a person or group supporting gay clubs, societies, organizations, processions or meetings. Public displays of affection by gay men and lesbians are also illegal.
