In This Issue

Back in May, we reported on a tour of Southern Health departments Leisha McKinley-Beach and I conducted. We kicked off our tour in Florida, where we visited Miami-Dade County (Miami), Broward County (Fort Lauderdale), Orange County (Orlando) and Alachua County (Gainesville).

For all of the promise that pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) holds, there are significant barriers that can keep it from decreasing the risk of HIV. In the Florida cities of Gainesville and Orlando, the local health departments are using a number of innovative ways to take down those barriers and expand access to PrEP in Black communities.

Fighting the Black HIV/AIDS Epidemic in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

 

Black Americans make up 25.7 percent of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.'s population; yet 47 percent of people diagnosed with HIV in the city between 2010 and 2014 were Black.

Houston Organizations Collaborate to Learn About PrEP

Like the rest of Black America, Houston has a PrEP problem.

The introduction of pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, as a method of preventing HIV has ushered in a new era of hope that the end of the HIV/AIDS epidemic is near.

Teaching Mississippians About PrEP 1 Person at a Time

Of the 12 states where people have the highest lifetime risk of HIV infection, eight are located in the South. In fact, the South accounted for 62 percent of new diagnoses among Black Americans in 2014, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
