Study: In Black Men, Internalized Racism Speeds Up Aging

Racism is a powerful enough force that it can wear down a man's body. Those are the findings, at once common-sense and groundbreaking, in a study led by University of Maryland epidemiologist David Chae which examines the relationship between white blood cell telomere lengths and experiences with racism.

The second in a series of stories on HIV stigma and criminalization.Being HIV-positive can still carry a powerful stigma. Since July 2010, the U.S. Department of Justice has opened at least 49 investigations into alleged HIV discrimination. The department has won settlements from state prisons, medical clinics, schools, funeral homes, insurance companies, day care centers and even alcohol rehab centers for discriminating against HIV-positive people. Individuals with HIV may also fear that news of their status will spread to third parties, leading to rejection, embarrassment or ostracism for themselves or even their loved ones.

Only 1 in 5 US HIV Doctors Surveyed Uses PrEP, Despite High Awareness

Only 1 in 5 US HIV physicians surveyed in 2011 used antiretrovirals for preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP), even though large majorities knew about early PrEP research and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance.

New Media and Organizations Serving Black Gay Men

Last week, researchers, AIDS services organizations and others attended the National African American MSM Leadership Conference on HIV/AIDS and other Health Disparities. This annual event is hosted by National AIDS Education & Services for Minorities (NAESM), an organization that has served the community of black men who have sex with men (BMSM) for almost 25 years.
