Running the Anchor Leg


Last week began with President Obama's reminder in his State of the Union address of the promise of an AIDS-free generation. It ended with a reminder that many obstacles exist along the road to fulfilling that promise, as the National Association of People with AIDS (NAPWA) ceased operations.

Soon health care professionals who don’t specialize in HIV/AIDS will be offered a helpful list of guidelines to follow, as provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Panel on Antiretroviral Guidelines for Adults and Adolescents.

HPV Vaccine May Prevent Up to 61% of Anal Cancers in HIV+ US MSM


Currently available bivalent and quadrivalent human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines could prevent up to 61.5% of anal cancers in HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM) in the United States, according to an HPV type analysis by the National Cancer Institute. An investigational nonavalent vaccine could prevent up to 89% of anal cancers.

One in 300 US Women in High-Risk Group Infected With HIV Yearly


One in 300 high-risk women in 10 US communities become infected with HIV every year, according to results of a 2000-woman longitudinal study conducted in 2009 and 2010. This HIV incidence is more than 6 times higher than the rate reported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in a general population of US black women of similar age.
