FDA Panel Endorses Truvada for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis

Truvada (coformulated tenofovir/emtricitabine) should be licensed for use as once-daily pre-exposure prophylaxis in men and women at high risk of sexually acquired HIV infection. That decision came from the Antiviral Drugs Advisory Committee of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after 8.5 hours of deliberation.

Perinatal Hepatitis B: What Every Mom Should Know

As we approach Mother’s Day this Sunday and then observe Women’s Health Week (May 13-19), it is an excellent opportunity to focus on actions that can be taken to improve the health and well-being of mothers and their infants. Since May is also Hepatitis Awareness Month, I would like to highlight perinatal hepatitis B transmission and the actions needed to eliminate this preventable disease. An estimated 1.4 million Americans are living with chronic (lifelong) hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.
