Justice Department Issues Letter Regarding Illegal Exclusion of Individuals with HIV/AIDS from Occupational Training and State Licensing

The Justice Department has issued letters to the attorneys general of all 50 states, as well as U.S. territories to request their assistance in addressing the illegal exclusion of individuals with HIV/AIDS from occupational training and state licensing. Persons with HIV and persons with AIDS are covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which gives federal civil rights protections to persons with disabilities in public accommodations, employment, and state and local government services.

Health Overhaul Could Double Community Health Centers' Caseload

Community health centers serve 20 million people every year, and that number is expected to double by 2015, thanks to an $11 billion infusion from the health-care overhaul and $2 billion in federal stimulus funds.

Illinois Commences Development of Statewide HIV/AIDS Plan


In a recent article, my colleague at AIDS Foundation Chicago, Keith R. Green, profiled efforts underway in Illinois to develop a statewide operational plan aligned with the National HIV/AIDS Strategy. Keith frankly observes that “coordinated efforts at the national level will only produce small results without similar coordination within local jurisdictions.”

2011 AAHU Cohort Announced

The African American HIV University (AAHU) Community Mobilization College (CMC) is proud to announce its third cohort. This year's 31 Fellows come to us from a wide range of community-based and AIDS service organizations around the country. The 2011 Fellows will be in Los Angeles from April 24-29 to participate in their first training that will guide them through the development of a community needs assessment specific to their local Black community.  The 2011 AAHU Fellows are:
