Reflections on the One-Year Anniversary of the National HIV/AIDS Strategy Launch
Since President Obama released the first-ever National HIV/AIDS Strategy (the “Strategy”) last July, 2010, I have had the privilege of helping to guide its implementation as well as coordinate the many integrated federal activities involved in reaching these ambitious goals. On this first anniversary, we can celebrate considerable strides toward reaching the Strategy’s clear and measurable targets by 2015, but there is still more work to be done across all sectors.

After Much Scrutiny, HHS Releases Health Insurance Exchange Rules
State flexibility takes center stage in proposed federal rules governing marketplaces where individuals and small businesses can shop for health insurance starting in 2014.
The long-anticipated rules released Monday are less prescriptive than some consumer advocates desired, but grant states’ requests that they be given broad leeway to design and regulate the marketplaces, called exchanges.

National Initiative Advances Integration of HIV in Primary Care Settings
In response to the persistent and disproportionate impact of HIV on racial and ethnic minority communities in the United States, last fall the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) established the AIDS Education and Training Centers (AETC) National Center for HIV Care in Minority Communities (NCHCMC) with the mission of advancing culturally competent, comprehensive, quality HIV care for racial and ethnic minority communities severely impacted by HIV/AIDS.

Last week I attended the Essence Music festival, where I saw Jennifer Hudson perform her new song "I Remember Me". Before she sang she reminded the audience that none of us were there ten years ago. We didn’t know the Jennifer Hudson before the fame. Nobody in her life was around to remember her from that period. She has to do that for herself. Loosely paraphrasing, Jennifer Hudson was saying: “If I remember me, if the success and celebrity all go away, I can still survive.
