Make a Resolution to Help End the Epidemic

Welcome to 2014. 2013 was clearly a tumultuous year, from the lows of the government shutdown and shaky rollout of healthcare.gov, the Affordable Care Act website, to the highs of the U.S. Supreme Court standing up for marriage equality. But even with healthcare.gov's initial challenges, over 2 million Americans who previously didn't have access to healthcare now have access to healthcare—no more pre-existing conditions, no more annual caps, no more lifetime caps. That is remarkable!

Arkansas Puts Unique Spin on Expanded Health-Care Coverage


It's not too surprising that Arkansas' Democratic governor would respond favorably to the Affordable Care Act (ACA), or that the state's Republican-controlled Legislature would voice objections to health-care reform. But what's novel is the way Gov. Mike Beebe handled the situation, coming up with a way to implement a portion of the law in a way that pleases lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.

Congresswoman Lee Introduces Legislation to Halt Federal Funding for Abstinence-Only Education




WASHINGTON DC – Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee introduced The Repealing Ineffective and Incomplete Abstinence-Only Program Funding Act of 2013, HR 3774, which would end to federal funding of abstinence-only-until marriage programs.

Consumers Beware: Not All Health Plans Cover A Doctor's Visit Before The Deductible Is Met


If you buy one of the less expensive insurance plans sold through the health law's marketplaces, you may be in for a surprise. Some plans will not pay for a doctor visit before you meet your annual deductible, which could be thousands of dollars.

Missed Visits Common in Early HIV Care and Linked to Death in US


In a private healthcare system in the United States, two thirds of people diagnosed with HIV missed at least one visit during their first year of care, and missing visits raised the risk of death 71%.
