Tamika Curtis-Stiff, BTAN Jackson, Miss.: Assessing Where We Stand

During AIDS 2012 we--from policymakers to PLWHA to doctors--must come together to assess where we are, evaluate recent scientific developments and lessons learned and collectively chart a course to end the pandemic. The conference will also shine the global spotlight on Black America's HIV epidemic.

Kieta D. Mutepfa, BTAN Los Angeles: Mastering Our Fate

I think that AIDS 2012 will create a significant shift in how Americans think, view and perceive HIV/AIDS. For more than two decades, Americans have willingly offered financial, institutional and technical assistance and support for addressing the epidemic outside U.S. borders. AIDS 2012 signifies a willing and bold stance to say that Americans are not exempt, we do not have all the answers, and we are equal partners in addressing and ending HIV throughout the world and within our own borders.

Precious Jackson, BTAN Los Angeles: Moving Beyond Condoms

It feels phenomenal to be able to attend a premiere HIV conference in Washington, D.C., among 20,000 delegates from around the world. I will interact with my peers and colleagues, engage in conversations about how we as leaders, scientists and policy makers can educate and create collaborative partnerships in communities highly impacted by this horrific disease so we can eradicate HIV altogether.

Karen Bennett, BTAN Louisiana: Growing Professional Networks

I’m delighted to be selected to attend the International AIDS Conference and to have the opportunity to meet many people who work in HIV/AIDS and PLWHA from around the world. Collaborating with people outside of Louisiana will arm me both with more knowledge and information about interventions being carried out in other states.

As an HIV-prevention and consumer advocate and HIV-prevention researcher, I understand that the most effective prevention, care and treatment strategies require insight from and collaboration and dialogue among multiple stakeholders: policymakers, PLWHA, HIV-prevention specialists, care workers and others. AIDS 2012 provides the opportunity for us to converge from around the world.
