The State of the Union and You

Daniel C. Montoya Appointed as NMAC Deputy Executive Director

The National Minority AIDS Council (NMAC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Daniel C. Montoya as its new Deputy Executive Director. Daniel brings with him more than 22 years of senior level HIV/AIDS and public health experience, focusing on strategic communications, public affairs and project management with public, private and non-governmental organizations.

New Scrutiny For Insurance Mandate After Repeal Vote

With the largely symbolic House vote to repeal the health law behind them, Republican leaders now will focus on eliminating or changing specific provisions. A few changes might even win some Democratic support. Republicans especially dislike the individual mandate – the requirement that Americans obtain insurance or face a penalty – because they see it as an unconstitutional imposition of government power. Supporters say it’s critical to the law’s success. Without the mandate, the argument goes, healthy people won’t buy policies until they’re ill, leaving mostly sick – and expensive -- people in the insurance pool. That would push insurance premiums up and undermine a critical requirement in the law that insurers provide coverage to individuals with preexisting medical conditions.

The ADAP Watch

From NAPWA: The National Association of People with AIDS

We entered the new year with more than 5,000 Americans on ADAP waiting lists - as of January 7, 5,154 that we know about. New numbers expected today from NASTAD are likely to be higher, as Virginia starts moving an expected 760 PLWHA currently getting their HIV drugs through Virginia's ADAP program from active to waiting list status.

Thirty years into the HIV/AIDS epidemic, and after decades of research disappointments, 2010 brought major breakthroughs that put scientific advances such as microbicides, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and vaccines within reach and created a favorable environment for other prevention and treatment efforts. Some experts predict that some of these discoveries will change the trajectory of the AIDS epidemic.
