Public Opinion Polls Uncover Differing Views On Plans For Medicare's Future


NPR reports that the answer to how the public is reacting to plans to transform the Medicare program depends on precisely how the question is posed. Meanwhile, different polls are finding varying impressions among Americans. A Gallup poll released Wednesday found the public evenly divided over how to handle the budget, but a Kaiser Family Foundation tracking poll found that seniors seem to prefer Medicare as it is.

Few Seniors Support GOP Plan To Restructure Medicare


Senior citizens, whose fierce opposition to the 2010 health overhaul law helped propel Republicans' midterm election gains, have little appetite for the House GOP's plans to turn Medicare into a voucher-type program that sends beneficiaries to private plans but limits the amount of federal funding, according to a poll released today.

Concerns for Black Gay/Bisexual HIV Raised to Global Platform at Dominican Republic Conference


Much of the recent HIV/AIDS data on Black gay and bisexual men— or, "men who have sex with men"  (MSM)   in public health jargon—has been sobering. A recent Centers for Disease Control study of more than 8,100 MSM found almost one in three Black MSM are HIV positive, compared to only 16 percent of white gay/ and bisexual men.  The numbers were even higher in some cities.

"We kept trying to find out what the problem was and weren't able to," recalls Beny J. Primm, M.D., who discovered his first case of HIV before the illness had a name. A young man had lymphadenopathy, a lymph node infection, whose baffling cause soon led the doctor's knowledge about substance abuse down an unexpected path that intersected with HIV.
