More Than Pencils, More Than Books

Last week I joined the millions of Americans who sent their children back to school when I took my nephew James to the airport so he could return to college for his final year in college. On our ride to the airport, James and I engaged in our annual tradition: talking about the school year, reviewing our expectations and discussing the importance of hard work and the value of education. (Actually, I did most of the talking. He did most of the listening.)
Coming of Age During an Epidemic: Are Our Children Prepared to Protect Themselves?

To end the HIV/AIDS epidemic, the National HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS) describes the need for evidence-based prevention programs, particularly for Black youths, who are coming of age in the midst of an epidemic among their peers. Yet students return this fall to schools that have few concrete goals in place to improve or even standardize sexual- and reproductive-health education, whose content and accuracy varies by geographical region, by school district and even from classroom to classroom--and is widely viewed by experts as a mess.

Droppin' Knowledge: Docs Don't Talk to Boys Enough About Sexual Health

As I drive my 14-year-old son to a movie, the radio talk-show host discusses whether girls as young as 10 or 12 should be prescribed birth-control pills. I focus in, realizing that this is a classic "teachable moment."
"So," I say cautiously, "did you learn about birth control in your human-sexuality course?" He stares out the window, then shrugs, saying, "I don't remember." I persevere, asking about condoms, the pill, safer sex, landing feebly on the big pitch: "Just wait as long as possible. You can't take sex lightly. You have to be prepared."
