The Black AIDS Institute Wants to Hear Your Health Care Stories

Researchers want to hear about your experiences with health insurance
On May 4, 2017, Republicans in the House of Representatives passed the American Health Care Act (AHCA), also popularly known as Trumpcare. This was their first successful step towards repealing and replacing the Affordable Care Act (ACA), or Obamacare. According to the bi-partisan Congressional Budget Office, about 14 million Americans will lose health coverage by just 2018.
Yet, not enough people are asking questions about how repealing the Affordable Care Act will affect Black America specifically.
The Black AIDS Institute (BAI) is developing a report on Black America's stakes in the national debate about the future of healthcare in America and "repeal and replace" of the Affordable Care Act. For this report, BAI seeks to interview and profile Black Americans who want share their thoughts on why keeping and improving stable, uninterrupted and affordable health coverage is so important.
We aim to speak interview and profile a diverse set of Black Americans, from different parts of the country. We are looking for people in states that chose to expand Medicaid, as well as people living in states that did not expand Medicaid. We are particularly, but not exclusively, looking for people from Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Georgia, Illinois, Maine, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, South Carolina, and Virginia.
Here are the types of questions that we may ask:
● Have you benefited from different parts of Obamacare including Medicaid expansion, employer-provided insurance or health insurance purchased on the Marketplace?
● Do you or someone in your family have a "pre-existing condition" as currently listed under the ACA?
● Did you have adequate and affordable healthcare before the ACA?
● Are you age 60 or older?
● What are your greatest fears about the proposed repeal of the ACA?
● Would you be able to afford health insurance if the subsidies currently provided by the ACA were taken away from you?
● How do you think these changes are going to affect you or your dependents?
